A GLORIOUS GALLERY OF GALLERIES!!
The Young Artists and I hope you will visit this site often, and view the many galleries of fine art created by students at Sheridan School and First Grade students at Everett Elementary. Each grade level, K-4, has its own Home Page with Overview and Lesson Descriptions. If you look further on each Grade Level Home Page, you will find a link to each classroom gallery where every child's artwork is displayed. Of course, our student works are also on display throughout the year on the many gallery walls of Sheridan and Everett School!
Another gallery where our student work is displayed is our very own school district Gallery 300! This year, each of our five district schools, K-8, will showcase selected artworks throughout the year. For more details on Gallery 300, click this link. Gallery 300 Art Shows You are invited to share a comment, question, and/or contact me by visiting the Contact/About Ms. T page. Thank you for visiting this site--we hope you enjoyed your stay! WHAT IS ART?This timeless question has been asked and answered across cultures and throughout generations. I continue to be most inspired, however, by the following compiled responses from Fourth Grade Artists, September 2010.
Art is an expression of yourself.
It is imagination spun into symbols. Art shows what you feel inside. It is nature expressing itself. Art is a good way to calm down when you are stressed out. It is a fun way to relax. Art is a big story told in pictures. It is a community. Art is a sunset waiting to burst out with color, happiness, adventure, and chance. Art is inspiring. It sometimes speaks to you. Art is peaceful; a wonder; a fantasy; a dream. |
Each year, students are re-introduced to the book, Ish by Peter H. Reynolds; its lesson places value on the self-expressive nature of art. Art classes at Sheridan School encourage individual expression, imagination, problem solving, and intelligent risk-taking. Mistakes are invited and expected as students engage in the creative process.
Students receive instruction in the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. These art elements and design principles are introduced in appropriate developmental stages, and reflect Illinois State Standards. A variety of tools, medium, and processes are used to create expressive artworks in 2-D and 3-D at each grade level. Content is often inspired by works of various Master Artists, multicultural studies, integration of classroom studies, personal experience, and the talents of one another.

ART SCHEDULE 2015-16
Students in Grades 1-4 receive sixty minutes of art instruction each week; full-day Kindergarten students experience 30 minutes each week. Sheridan School also hosts the Early Learning Program (ELP); art sessions for these young learners run 20-30 minutes weekly. Smocks are available for students in the art room; however, please note the day of the week when your child has art class so that a favorite outfit is not subjected to the permanence of purple paint :-)
MON: ELP; KA; Grades 3 and 4* TUE: Everett 1B; 1A; 2D; Grades 3 and 4* WED: Everett 1C; 1B; 2S; Grades 3 and 4* THU: Everett 1H; 1M; Grades 3 and 4* FRI: KR; 2E; Grades 3 and 4* * Which particular class meets for Grades 3 and 4 will depend on our 6-week rotation schedule. |
ASSESSMENTS AND REPORT CARDSInformal assessments are encouraged with each studio experience. Artists are invited to "take a studio walk" during class for purposes of gaining inspiration, asking questions, and sharing compliments. All pieces are celebrated as a class when complete; artists share a 'well-done' about their own artwork, or that of a classmate. All work is celebrated on the gallery walls throughout Sheridan School.
Report Cards are completed for Grades 1–4; criteria reflect NATIONAL Standards for Visual Art. Students are individually assessed on the following National Standards for Visual Arts: • Generates artistic ideas • Develops and refines artistic techniques and work for presentation • Exhibits effort, commitment, and perseverance |
