ART CLASSES IN FIRST GRADE - An Overview
First Grade Artists are encouraged to express imagination while focusing primarily on developing the art elements of Line, Shape, and Color; however the remaining elements of Space, Texture, and Form are also introduced throughout the year. Students are challenged to give attention to the full Space of the composition. Primary and secondary colors are introduced, along with color tints. Artists work with a variety of tools and 2-D medium including tempera, watercolor, oil and chalk pastel; 3-D pieces are also constructed in clay, as well as a variety of papers and fun texture materials.

PRIMARILY PLAYFUL PUMPKINS - Mixed Media Painting in Tempera and Oil Pastel
Young Artists began with a review of the primary colors red, yellow, and blue. Then, using only primary color tempera paints, students practiced color mixing to create the secondary colors for these playful pumpkin paintings. Students began with yellow and blended red to make the orange pumpkin, then continued with yellow and blue to make green for the ground, and finally painted blue with red for the purple night sky. Artists were amazed to see the many color variations they were able to create within the secondary color family. In a second lesson, students added playful details and texture lines with oil pastel to complete these fanciful harvest pumpkins. Click below to visit Galleries.

MIRO INSPIRED PAINTINGS - Line, Shape, and Color Study in Tempera
Inspired by the works of Joan Miro, students studied the art elements of Line, Shape, and Color to create these playful paintings. When observing several works by Miro, students noticed that Miro often included a crossing of lines in his paintings, which we fondly named "Miro Stars." Look for our version of Miro Stars as you view the galleries of these Miro-inspired birds, fish, dogs, houses, or people (and one teapot). Click below to visit Galleries.
