ART CLASSES IN FOURTH GRADE - An Overview

Fourth Grade Artists continue to refine their skills in applying the art elements of Line, Color, Shape, Space, Form, and Texture. Similarly, lessons provide opportunities to further develop design principles such as Movement, Pattern, Balance, and Variety.  Building on previous knowledge, these artists demonstrate personal choice and critical thinking in selecting appropriate tools and medium to achieve a desired effect. Courageous exploration, problem-solving, and reflection are encouraged throughout the creative process. Whether working in 2-D or 3-D medium, the newest challenge for this intermediate artist is to understand how the art elements and design principles combine to express an idea or mood.

                              •CRITICAL THINKING

What can you construct when given one stack of newspaper, one roll of masking tape, and one hour?  Fourth Grade Artists were assigned this problem-solving task. Artists were randomly assigned to groups of 3-5 artists, and were then given the following task:
                                  • Create a free-standing animal using only newspaper and tape.
                                  • All members in the group must contribute to the product's construction.
                                  • The final product must be free-standing for at least 60 seconds.
                                  • Time will expire in one hour.

The creativity and collaborative skills demonstrated in each of the groups were impressive. Most groups began by discussing a plan; one group dove right in. Frustrations were genuine, but so were the supportive comments from team members, and the joy of success. Take a look at the images in the slide show, and get a glimpse  of our problem-solving experience! Enjoy!
