WELCOME to the HOME Page for Art Classes at Sheridan School!
The Sheridan Young Artists and I hope you will visit this site often, and view the many galleries of fine art created by students at Sheridan School. Each grade level, K-4, has its own Home Page with Overview and Lesson Descriptions. Then, scrolling down from the grade level Home Page, you will find each classroom gallery where every child's artwork is displayed in celebration.
You are invited to share a comment, question, and/or contact me by visiting the Contact/About Ms. T page. Thank you for visiting this site--we hope you enjoyed your stay! Come back and visit us soon! Miss Cathy Tkachuk, NBCT Early and Middle Childhood Art Sheridan Elementary School |
WHAT IS ART?This timeless question has been asked and answered across cultures and throughout generations. I am most inspired, however, by the following compiled responses from Fourth Grade Artists, September 2010.
Art is an expression of yourself.
It is imagination spun into symbols. Art shows what you feel inside. It is nature expressing itself. Art is a good way to calm down when you are stressed out. It is a fun way to relax. Art is a big story told in pictures. It is a community. Art is a sunset waiting to burst out with color, happiness, adventure, and chance. Art is inspiring. It sometimes speaks to you. Art is peaceful; a wonder; a fantasy; a dream. |
Each year, students are re-introduced to the book, Ish by Peter H. Reynolds; its lesson places value on the self-expressive nature of art. Art classes at Sheridan School encourage individual expression, imagination, problem solving, and intelligent risk-taking. Mistakes are invited and expected as students engage in the creative process.
Students receive instruction in the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. These art elements and design principles are introduced in appropriate developmental stages, and reflect Illinois State Standards. A variety of tools, medium, and processes are used to create expressive artworks in 2-D and 3-D at each grade level. Content is often inspired by works of various Master Artists, multicultural studies, integration of classroom studies, personal experience, and the talents of one another.

ART SCHEDULE 2011-12Students in Grades 1-4, as well as our Full-day Kindergarten, receive sixty minutes of art instruction each week; Half-day Kindergarten receives thirty minutes each week. This year we welcome the Early Learning Program to the Sheridan campus; these art sessions will run 30 minutes weekly. Smocks are available for students in the art room; however, please note the day of the week when your child has art class so that a favorite outfit or new team jersey is not subjected to the permanence of purple paint :-)
MON: Grades 3 and 4* TUE: PreK-AM; 2W; KA-PM; 1V WED: KH; 2D; ELP; 1M THU: 2M; 1E; Grades 3 and 4* FRI: KA; KH-PM; Grades 3 and 4* * Which particular class meets for Grades 3 and 4 will depend on our 3-week rotation schedule. | ASSESSMENTS AND REPORT CARDSInformal assessments are encouraged with each studio experience. Artists are invited to "take a gallery tour" during class for purposes of gaining inspiration, asking questions, and sharing compliments. All pieces are celebrated as a class when complete; artists share a 'well-done' about their own artwork, or that of a classmate. Report Cards are completed for Grades 1–4 and criteria reflect State Standards. Individual performance of these standards is assessed as follows: 4=Shows Strength; 3=Is Acceptable; 2=Is Improving; 1=Needs Improvement Individual EFFORT is a valuable tool in one’s success, and is recorded as follows: (+) Excellent; (=) Satisfactory; (-) Needs Improvement |
