ART CLASSES IN THIRD GRADE - An Overview

Third Grade Artists are encouraged to express original thinking while continuing to develop the art elements of Line, Shape, Color, Space, Texture, and Form. Students are now formerly introduced to the design principles of Movement, Pattern, Balance, and Variety. Art lessons are planned to give students greater opportunities to experiment with selecting from a variety of tools and medium, discovering which work best to achieve a desired effect. The art process and product are more sophisticated, as young artists transition from basic skills and techniques to a more intermediate level of artistic expression.

WARM AND COOL LANDSCAPES - Landscape-inspired Paintings in Tempera and Oil Pastel

                              Picture
After viewing various landscape photographs and art prints, students imagined how an artist might communicate a landscape using a limited color palette and basic landforms.  The art elements of Line and Shape were a priority in designing these compositions. The element of Color was then emphasized with the use of warm and cool color palettes.  Students were encouraged to create analagous hues within the warm and cool palette, as well as to use white for additional tints.  Embellishments were then added with oil pastels. These finishing details helped to communicate mood and movement. Click below to view Galleries.

WALK IN MY SHOES - A Shoe Study in Line with Watercolor or Colored Pencil

                              Picture
In response to the third grade "Stepping Into Success" theme, students studied Andy Warhol paintings of shoes, along with other shoe images. While focusing on the elements of Line and Space, students created their own style of shoe. Young artists chose to complete their art piece in either watercolor or colored pencil, and sometimes both.  Click below to view Galleries.
